Biography

Vanessa Marshall de Monthé is an associate at Wordstone Dispute Resolution. She focuses on investment and international commercial arbitration, acting as counsel in proceedings conducted under the aegis of various institutional rules such as ICC, ICSID, PCA and LCIA.

Her practice spans a wide range of sectors, with experience in disputes in the energy, EPC, construction and telecommunications sectors, including matters involving African jurisdictions.

Before joining Wordstone Dispute Resolution, Vanessa worked in the international arbitration team of an international law firm in Paris. She also completed internships in the public international law and arbitration practice of a leading US law firm, as well as within the legal departments of several listed companies in Paris and Madrid.

Vanessa is a member of several professional associations, including Young ICCA, AfricArb, Young ICSID and YIAG.

Recent Experience

  • Represented a European contractor against a state-owned energy company in a Paris-seated ICC arbitration relating to a contract for the design and construction of a gas compression unit.
  • Represented a specialized UN agency against a West African company in a PCA-administered arbitration relating to a contract for the provision of services in connection with the agency’s international operations.
  • Represented a UAE company against the Central Bank of Iraq in proceedings before the Paris Court of Appeal in which the Central Bank of Iraq sought the annulment of an ICC commercial arbitration award and challenged its enforcement.
  • Advised a global energy contractor on issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, including force majeure, and on the cost and schedule impacts on a construction project in West Africa.
  • Represented a major telecommunications company in post-award proceedings before the Common Court of Justice and Arbitration (CCJA) regarding the management of an operational subsidiary.
